How to make your own PowerGrade

A node-based color grading course for DaVinci Resolve, taught by building one complete PowerGrade from an empty timeline. Six hours, eight modules, and a tree you own at the end of it.

Watch the approach

Buying a look teaches you nothing. Building one teaches you everything after it.

Presets get a shot to the finish line. They do not tell you which node to reach for when the footage is underexposed, the skin has gone magenta and the client is watching. This course is the reasoning, node by node, in the order you would actually build it.

What you walk out with

Your own tree, and the reasoning behind every node in it

A finished PowerGrade

Built by you, saved as a .drx, and portable across projects, cameras and clients.

A repeatable method

The same build order every time, so a new camera or a new stock is an adjustment rather than a restart.

The ability to fix it

When halation blooms on a specular or grain crawls on a gradient, you know which node did it and why.

Curriculum

Eight modules, twenty-two lessons, in build order

Nothing is taught out of sequence. Each module ends with the node tree in a state you can import, so you can join at any point or check your work against the finished one.

  1. 01

    Color management before color

Set the project up in DaVinci YRGB Color Managed so S-Log3, V-Log and BRAW all arrive in the same place. Every decision after this depends on it.

    32 min
  2. 02

Reading the image on the scopes

Exposure, white balance and where the skin sits, judged on the parade rather than on a hunch. Balance first, look second.

    41 min
  3. 03

    Building the base node tree

Node order, labels and why a serial chain you can read at midnight beats a stack of stills you cannot take apart.

    46 min
  4. 04

Contrast, density and the tone curve

Shaping density with custom curves, printer lights and a soft clip that holds the roll-off instead of crushing it.

    58 minIn edit
  5. 05

    Split toning and hue shaping

Hue versus hue, hue versus saturation, and warm and cool separation that survives a client note without falling apart.

    44 minIn edit
  6. 06

    Halation, bloom and diffusion

Growing the glow out of the highlights already in the shot, so it reacts to your image rather than sitting on top of it.

    52 minIn edit
  7. 07

    Print emulation and grain

Stacking a print stock response, then matching grain size to the format so the frame looks photographed instead of filtered.

    61 minIn edit
  8. 08

    Saving and shipping your PowerGrade

Exporting the .drx, keeping LUT dependencies intact, versioning the tree and moving it between projects and cameras.

    36 minIn edit

Modules marked in edit are recorded and released as they are finished. Buying now includes every one of them, and everything added to the course after that.
